Government hospital beds: 840,455 (31 December 2022)
Central Bureau of Health Intelligence, Directorate General of Health Services, MoHFW
840,455 (beds, 2022). GOVERNMENT HOSPITALS ONLY - the single most important India caveat. 307,552 rural + 532,903 urban = 840,455 beds across 36,626 government hospitals as on 31.12.2022; the table note states government hospitals include central government, state government and local government bodies. PRIVATE-SECTOR BEDS ARE EXCLUDED and CBHI publishes no all-India private bed count, while India's private sector is widely held to operate the majority of beds - so treat 840,455 as a FLOOR, not a national total. Source given as Directorate Health Services of respective State/UT. Excludes separately tabulated AYUSH (Table 6.2.6), Railways (6.2.4) and ESIC (6.2.5) beds. Loaded over valid TLS and parsed with pdftotext -layout.
