Cumulative hospitalisations authorised under the public health insurance scheme
Press Information Bureau, Government of India (PIB Backgrounder, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare data)
12.03 crore, or 120.3 million, hospitalisations were covered under the public health insurance scheme cumulatively since it launched on 23 September 2018, as at 5 June 2026, across 36,218 empanelled hospitals. This is neither an annual figure nor a national one: it excludes every admission paid out of pocket, by private insurance, by state schemes outside the national one, by the central government and employee schemes, and at non-empanelled facilities. Corroborating points on the same cumulative series are 10.98 crore as at 1 December 2025 and 4.83 crore as at 1 May 2023. No all-India annual inpatient episode count is published.
