Hospital beds, all functions: 13,116 (2024)
OECD Health Statistics, Health Care Resources - Hospital beds by function of health care (OECD.ELS.HD:DSD_HEALTH_REAC_HOSP@DF_BEDS_FUNC); data supplied by New Zealand
13,116 (beds, 2024). FALLBACK SOURCE. Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora does not publish a national hospital bed total: searched tewhatuora.govt.nz, healthnz.govt.nz and health.govt.nz, which publish acute hospital BED DAYS and per-facility audit bed counts but no national bed census. OECD total = somatic 11,263 + psychiatric 1,853. OECD 'hospital beds' counts beds regularly maintained and staffed and immediately available for use, in all hospitals (public and private) - this is a different construct from Japan's 許可病床 (licensed beds) or Korea's 의료법 total, both of which are licensed capacity and therefore inflated relative to this measure.
