HCUP Statistical Brief 287: Overview of Major Ambulatory Surgeries Performed in Hospital-Owned Facilities, 2019

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project

Summary

In 2019 knee arthroplasty ranked sixteenth among major ambulatory surgeries in hospital-owned facilities at 317,800 procedures across 301,900 encounters, 2.0 per cent of the 15.7 million total. Under Medicare as primary expected payer it ranked fifth at 181,600 procedures. The Nationwide Ambulatory Surgery Sample covers hospital-owned ambulatory facilities only and excludes freestanding ambulatory surgical centres, so this is a floor on ambulatory knee arthroplasty rather than a total.
