Hospital-Acquired Conditions
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
Summary
For discharges occurring on or after 1 October 2008, hospitals receive no additional payment for cases in which a selected condition was not present on admission. The list includes Falls and Trauma, covering fractures, dislocations, intracranial injuries, crushing injuries, burns and other injuries, and Stage III and IV pressure ulcers. Conditions were selected for being high cost or high volume, for assigning a case to a higher-paying DRG when present as a secondary diagnosis, and for being reasonably preventable.
